Travel Ban from the UAE: How to Find Out and What to Do

A travel ban rarely comes with a notice. Most people find out at passport control — which is the worst possible moment, because you have to act from the airport itself.

Who can impose a ban

In the UAE, a travel restriction can be imposed on several grounds, and these are different mechanisms with different procedures for lifting them.

  • A civil court case. A creditor files a lawsuit and at the same time applies for an interim measure. This often happens without your knowledge or participation.
  • Enforcement proceedings. A ruling has been issued and the debt has not been paid — the restriction is imposed as a means of compulsion.
  • Police and public prosecution. A restriction tied to an open case, pending its resolution.
  • Labour and family cases. For example, a dispute over child support or over taking a child out of the country.

How to find out about a ban in advance

Some checks are available publicly: the Dubai Police and court portals let you see certain categories of case. The problem is that they do not show everything — restrictions from civil cases and creditor complaints often do not appear there.

A full picture comes from checking several databases at once, including immigration. It takes one working day, costs around AED 750, and can be done remotely, including from outside the UAE. If you left the Emirates with an unpaid loan or left a company amid a dispute, it is worth running the check before buying a ticket.

What to do in the first 24 hours

  1. Do not sign documents in Arabic. Not explanations, not undertakings. A signed document will be interpreted based on its Arabic wording.
  2. Establish the grounds. Ask for the case number and the name of the authority involved. Without this, the check takes longer.
  3. Do not transfer money "to lift the ban." Lifting a ban happens through a formal procedure, not a payment made on a verbal agreement. Paying without a formal withdrawal of the complaint lifts nothing.
  4. Check the status. The grounds determine the route: a civil debt is handled through repayment or a settlement, a criminal case through the public prosecution.

How long it takes to lift the ban

If the debt is repaid and the creditor has withdrawn the complaint — from five working days. Through the courts, once the grounds have fallen away but the record remains — from three weeks. In criminal cases, the restriction is lifted together with the resolution of the case.

While the procedure is under way, you cannot leave. Attempting to fly out is recorded and can worsen your position in the case.
